GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Back to Black, released in 2006 by Universal, is the second album by the British sensation Amy Winehouse. On Back to Black, she is working once again with producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, who frame her provocative lyrics in a mixture of music styles.
Coming from a working-class home and living a life of addiction, the London singer writes all of her songs from her experiences of love and loss. As often as not, though, the songs on the album are universal for she manages to transform ordinary sentiments into powerful lyrics.
MUSIC:
Amy Winehouse has crafted a soul album, embracing at the same time contemporary R&B and some reggae rhythms, but still letting her unique style come through in each and every song. Back to Black consists of a contradictory combination of blunt lyrics wrapped up in danceable 60’s music. From the single “Rehab” to the album closer we get to listen to some classic sounds mixed with jazz, soul, funk and R&B turning the album into something big and fearless.
VOICE:
This gifted singer with a big mouth, big style and big hair has the brassy voice of a 40 year-old black woman and her own quirky, eccentric and blunt lyrics. Her unique and sultry voice combined with feisty yet vulnerable lyrics were the reason she brought home 5 Grammy awards and a Brit award.
She oozes soul; the entire album pleases with a contagious rhythm and really catchy lyrics. With its wide range of musical instruments and soul-filled vocals, we have nothing to whine about when listening to Winehouse’s much praised new album performed live or heard privately in our own home.
